Long evenings, gardens in full bloom and drinks outside make summer some of the most popular months in the wedding calendar. The only downside? Dressing for the heat.
The trick is finding an outfit that looks polished but still feels comfortable from the ceremony through to the last dance.
Start with fabric. Natural fibres like linen, cotton, silk and lightweight crepe will keep you far cooler than anything heavy or synthetic. A floaty midi or maxi dress is always a safe choice, while a lightweight suit or tailored trousers paired with a breathable shirt work well for men. If you’re buying something new, it’s worth paying attention to the fabric label rather than just the style.
When it comes to colour, lighter shades tend to be your friend. Soft blues, greens, pinks, yellows and floral prints all work beautifully for summer celebrations and are practical in the sunshine too. As always, leave white and ivory for the couple getting married.
Footwear is worth thinking about more than you might expect. Summer weddings often include at least part of the day outdoors, whether that’s a garden ceremony, drinks on the lawn or photos on the grass. Stiletto heels can quickly become a nightmare, so block heels, wedges or elegant flats are often the better choice. You’ll be much more comfortable and won’t spend the afternoon sinking into the ground.
Accessories should be practical as well as stylish. Sunglasses for the drinks reception, a pair of fold-up flats for later in the evening and a small handheld fan all make a difference. If the dress code allows, a lightweight hat or fascinator gives welcome shade during an outdoor ceremony too.
Finally, always check the invitation before choosing your outfit. A black-tie wedding at a country house calls for something very different to a relaxed marquee celebration or a rustic barn venue. Matching your outfit to the setting helps you feel confident and ensures you fit the occasion.
The best wedding guest outfits are the ones you don’t have to think about once you’ve arrived. If you’re comfortable, cool and appropriately dressed, you’ll spend far less time worrying about the weather and far more time celebrating with the couple.
